Alcatraz Island, CA
Rising from the water like a rocky fortress, Alcatraz Island has long been a symbol of San Francisco Bay. In 1854, the first lighthouse on the American West Coast was illuminated here. It was later replaced with an 84-foot concrete tower. Today, Alcatraz Light remains one of California's most important navigational aids.
